Context

At 12,000 RPM, a V10 race engine fires 100 times per second. Each combustion event sends a torsional shock wave rippling through the valvetrain, and the gear teeth driving your camshafts absorb every pulse. The result: pitting, spalling, and catastrophic gear failures that end races and destroy engines worth more than most houses.

The physics are unforgiving. Camshaft torque demand isn't constant—it spikes every time a valve spring compresses against a high-lift cam lobe. These torque reversals create dynamic tooth loads 3-5× higher than steady-state calculations predict. Current solutions exist: splined quill shafts, elastomeric dampers, and complex multi-element torsional absorbers. But they're expensive (£8,000+ per unit), require frequent replacement, and add packaging complexity that race engineers despise.

Your customer—a privateer racing team preparing for next season—needs a better answer. They've given you a brutal constraint envelope and six hours to prove you can solve it.

Your Goal

Design a compliant mechanism that decouples torsional vibration between the crankshaft gear and the camshaft drive train in a 90° V10 engine operating at 12,000 RPM. Your solution must reduce peak dynamic gear tooth loads by at least 40% compared to a rigid geartrain while surviving a full race season (2,000 km of competition running).

The winning design will demonstrate clear physical reasoning for why it works, not just what it looks like.
